VOICES ON THE INSIDE
Oklahoma

It’s odd to go through life invisible, While taking up so much space.
I am background noise
I am scenery
Except for when I am not
When you do see me – You think you know me because of my body.
fat
stupid
waste
You say you know my worth based on one moment of my past.
violent
felon
monster
I stumble – so you laugh
I struggle – and you smile
I cry – then you rejoice
But I am more than just your punch line
or your paperwork
or your physical standards
I may not be as good as my greatest accomplishments
yet I am worth so much more than my worst mistakes
So I don’t have to live in your world –
because inside, I carry my own.
